Description:
A detailed view of the ‘Factories’ or ‘hongs’, drawn and washed in monochrome by a Chinese artist in the style of a Western copper engraving. The view can be dated between December 1832 – when the French tricolour returned to the waterfront after a long absence – and 1839, when the space in front of the ‘hongs’ was enclosed. In May 1841 the three eastern ‘hongs’ were destroyed, to be rebuilt shortly afterwards in a different style.
