The New York merchant William Hunter, who arrived in China in 1825, described these country residences as being ‘on a vast scale, comprising curiously laid-out gardens, with grottoes and lakes, crossed by carved stone bridges, pathways neatly paved ...' (W. Hunter, The ‘Fan Kwae' at Canton, 1882, p.24). |
