Hong Kong and the harbour
(c. 1870 China)
Martyn Gregory Gallery
Description:
The city of Victoria, Hong Kong Island, is seen from the north across the harbour crowded with Chinese and Western vessels. Landmarks include Flagstaff House, St. John's Cathedral, Government House (with its tall flagstaff), and the godown and residence of Jardine, Matheson at East Point on the far left. On the summit of the Peak is the Signalling Station erected in 1861, with flags aloft. In the harbour are three covered 'receiving ships', used for naval administration and the accommodation of sailors; the three-decked vessel flying a blue ensign is perhaps H.M.S. Princess Charlotte, which lay at anchor in Hong Kong harbour from 1858 to 1875.
