According to Houbraken , Benjamin Gerritsz. Cuyp was born in Dordrecht in 1612 into a family of painters. He was the son of a glass painter, Gerrit Gerritsz. and his second wife, Everijnken Albertsdr. His much older half-brother, from his father’s first marriage, was Jacob Gerritsz.Cuyp , the history, portrait and genre painter, in whose atelier he studied alongside his nephew, the landscape painter, Aelbert Cuyp. By 1617, Jacob Gerrit Benjamin entered the Guild of St. Luke on 17 January 1631 at the same time as his younger brother, Gerrit Gerritsz. the younger. Little documentary information survives about his life but in 1643 he is twice recorded in The Hague as a painter, living with other artists and, in 1649, seventeen of his paintings appeared at auction at Wijk-bij-Duurstede. At the time of his death he was living again in Dordrecht with another half-brother, who was a glassmaker. On 16 August 1652 he made his last will and was buried in the Grote Kerk twelve days later.
