Carlo Dolci was the leading native Florentine painter of his day, extensively patronized by the Medici, the Florentine nobility and intelligentsia, the Church and foreign visitors. Baldinucci makes special mention of Dolci’s talent for painting small figures in his unique style, which fetched high prices during his lifetime. He also notes their “great diligence, the freshness and beauty of their colours, and the marvelous finish, all the more so because their tiny size necessities the most exact observation, and the most minute touch.
