Donaldson, the son of a glover was evidently poor and whilst very young supported himself by copying engravings and executing miniatures. He was awarded premiums by theEdinburgh Society of Arts. He exhibited in London at the Free  Society of Artists in 1764. A man of unsettled habits he took up chemistyr and patented a method of preserving vegetables and meat. Published a volume of poems and an essay on the Elments of Beautry, 1780
