Carlone came from Lombardy but studied in Venice and Rome. Though much of his work may be found in Lombardy, he worked on both sides of the Alps. His initial reputation was based upon large decorative fresco cycles, usually allegorical in subject, executed for palaces in Vienna, Prague and Southern Germany. Church commissions included Santissima Annunziata and San Fidele in Como, and a fresco cycle for the Duomo at Bergamo (1762).
